Every October31 in the United States, this is what people hear when they answer their doors.
Standing with bags outstretched are children in costume going from house to house.
All of them are wanting one thing treats, which usually include candies or cookie.
Supposedly, if the children are turned down for treats, they will play a trick on the people in the house.
Sometimes kids would throw toilet paper over the tops of the houses and trees.
At other times, eggs would be thrown at the house.
However, this tradition of punishment seems to be falling by the wayside.
Children dress up to be scary or ugly or cute. Some go trick-or-treating looking like ghosts, skeletons or monsters.
Others look like black cats or witches.
Some appear as Walt Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse or Goofy.
Comic-book heroes or fairy-tale characters are popular, too.
Today’s Halloween is a far cry from previous Halloweens.
In the past, children made costumes from old sheets.
Many kids today choose ready-made outfits that can be bought at the nearest mall.
Images of witches or black cats used to be made at home out of black and orange paper and put on windows.
Now those same images are pre-printed and available to any child with money in his or her hand.
People used to make candied apples; today’s folks buy large bags of cheap candy and forget the apples!
This season means big business for merchants.
The sale of Halloween-related goods in America brings in close to $3billion a year.
About two-thirds of all Americans decorate their houses for Halloween, thus making it the number two home-decorating holiday. (Christmas is number one)
Millions of dollars are also spent annually on pumpkins.
These are made into Halloween “jack-o-lanterns,” which are hollowed-out pumpkins with carved scary faces and candles placed inside.
Halloween was first celebrated as a church holiday.
