This month, according to DARPA officials, an artificial intelligence program defeated a human jet pilot in a simulated duel. This battle between humans and machines occurs as the military trains and certifies more of its pilots in digital cockpits rather than physical ones.
Heron Systems, a Maryland-based company, won the AlphaDogfight challenge last week, which was organized by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Eight companies competed against one another over two days using AI-powered simulated aircraft. Then, on the third day, Heron’s system defeated an F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot “in five straight simulated dogfights in the man-vs.-machine finale,” the group reported after the competition.
The companies who participated were Aurora Flight Sciences, a division of the Boeing Company, EpiSys Science, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Heron Systems, Lockheed Martin Corp., Perspecta Labs, PhysicsAI, and SoarTech. DARPA officials estimated that planning for the trial took around a year.
Col. Dan “Animal” Javorsek, program manager for the event at DARPA and a veteran F-16 pilot, claimed that Heron defeated Lockheed for the top rank among the companies participating in the event. There were three finalists: Aurora, Heron Lockheed, and PhysicsAI.
Javorsek stated during a live-stream on YouTube that Heron’s strategies during the three-day battle, such as an “aggressive gun maneuver,” gave them the advantage.
Other combative maneuvers were used by the AI-powered aircraft during the simulation, including a high-stakes game of chicken in which they flew directly at one another at a close range of 100 feet without pausing until the very last second.
The elite Air Force Weapons School, the military’s equivalent of Top Gun, is located at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, but according to Javorsek, these maneuvers exceeded the level of training that human pilots receive there.
Banger, the F-16 pilot who competed against Heron in the last round, continued, “We’re performing complex physics in a dynamic environment.” Only his call sign may be used to identify the pilot.
In a telephone interview with reporters, Banger stated, “I’m attempting to solve for angles and different closures, airspeed variances, etc. to get at a position where I may employ my weapon or whatever I choose [to employ] against an enemy aircraft.
