How Australia Is Going To Regulate AI
Australia is set to take its first steps towards regulating artificial intelligence technology, which could see some “high-risk” uses of AI banned completely.

AUSSIE AI REGULATION
They reckon it’s grown so fast, we need to pump the brakes with the same urgency we’d need for a pandemic or a nuclear war. So today, the Australian Government has announced plans to tighten our existing AI laws. It’s proposing a classification system with three different levels that can be used to label the risk factors of different AI technologies. So, something like an AI chess player would be low-risk, and something like an AI surgeon would be high-risk and would need special safeguards in place to protect people. While some technology, like facial recognition and social scoring tools, could be banned completely. The Government says it also recognizes the benefits of AI. So for the next two months, it’s taking suggestions from the public on how to handle things before weighing everything up carefully to make sure we tackle it the best we can.

STATE OF ORIGIN
Queensland has taken out game one of the State of Origin series! The Maroons smashed New South Wales 26-18 in an absolute thriller at Adelaide Oval. The team was trailing by 2 points with seven minutes ago and down to just 12 players after Thomas Flegler was sent off. But they refused to give up and clinched the win! Meanwhile, the women’s State of Origin will kick off tonight in Sydney.

NASA UFOs
For the first time, NASA has addressed the public about its investigations into UFOs. And they shared some early findings from a report they’re working on, all about these mysterious sightings in the sky. Last year NASA assembled a panel of 16 experts to study UFOs. But they call them Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, or UAP. And they’re now ready to share some of their early findings. It turns out they haven’t found any aliens yet. In fact, among the 800 plus reports they’ve been investigating, most haven’t been too difficult to explain. From military aircraft to balloons to the planet Venus, only around 2-5% of the cases are proving to be truly unusual. But they’re not ruling out the possibility of coming across something truly “out there.” They’re hoping to collect more data to support their investigations and want more people who see things they can’t explain to report them.

DUCKLINGS
Now to these ducklings stranded on a rooftop in England. They were found by a group of locals who used a plastic bucket to lower the ducks carefully to the ground. Once on the ground, they were taken to the quayside with mum in hot pursuit. Apparently, this has become a regular occurrence in recent years! With ducks deciding the roof looks like the perfect spot to lay their eggs.

GOATS
Now to a group of goats who are about to walk around the world in 30 days. Well, sort of. London Zoo is kicking off the challenge, which will see their resident ruminants trot 40,000 kays over the next month to raise money for animals in the wild. But they’re staying right here and will pull off the feat from the comfort of their own zoo.

LONDON ROBOT SHOW
And finally! To a robotics show in London, where there is a robot for just about anything. Drawing. Cooking toast. Playing chess. But what’s got folks really interested this year, is of course, artificial intelligence. And robots like this, which use ChatGPT to have a conversation with you.
