Europe is taking a stand against unrestricted use of artificial intelligence. The European Parliament has initiated a draft named the “Artificial Intelligence Act,” aiming to regulate AI applications, including facial recognition. Moreover, AI system developers, including ChatGPT, are being pushed to disclose more information regarding the data used to build AI models, and to eliminate illicit content. Although, there’s a debate around how feasible that truly is.
This risk-based regulation primarily targets AI applications with potential harmful implications, such as automated control of critical infrastructures. Yet, the prohibitions extend much further. Real-time facial recognition is wholly banned, albeit with ongoing discussions around potential exceptions. The use of biometric data extracted from social media platforms is off-limits too.
Technology bigwigs advocating for “reasonable” regulation express concerns that stringent laws could chase AI companies out of the EU. What are your thoughts on where the limits of reasonability lie?
On another front, California-based startup Varda is taking its pharmaceutical research to space. Its satellite now orbits the Earth, serving as a space-bound pharmaceutical lab, and upon reentry, it will operate as a hypersonic testing facility, reaching speeds up to Mach 25.
The lab’s primary purpose is to study protein crystal growth, a field of immense interest to pharmaceutical developers. Collaborating with Varda, Not Boring has crafted a unique leukemia immunotherapy drug, Blincyto, priced at a staggering $114 billion per kilogram.
Meanwhile, startup 1X, supported by OpenAI, has implemented its robots as security guards in a couple of industrial facilities in Europe and the US. EVE, the robot in question, can perform a myriad of tasks such as patrolling, opening doors, and picking up items. Future plans include nursing homes and hospices, with the robot also showcasing skills as a bartender and nurse. With the help of OpenAI, 1X aims to incorporate advanced language models into EVE, enabling it to interpret and execute human commands.
Singapore has deployed robotic policemen equipped with cameras, sensors, speakers, displays, indicators, and sirens. A retractable mast with a 360-degree camera and two-way communication allows station-based officers to interact with citizens directly. After four years of testing, these robocops are set for widespread implementation in the city-state with a population exceeding 5 million.
