S. Korean company develops AI program that objectively analyzes animal behavior

Observing behavioral changes in the animal testing stage is useful for evaluating the efficacy of drugs.
A South Korean bio company has developed a program that analyzes changes in animal behavior using AI.
Jeong Eun-joo has this report.

Lab mice are recorded by cameras that are installed in five locations: front, back, right, left, and bottom.
Based on the videos, an artificial intelligence program creates the skeletal coordinates of the mice by creating nine points on the animal and connecting the dots with lines.

It’s possible to observe behavioral changes in the mice by analyzing changes in their skeletal coordinates.
This enables researchers to quantify the effect of drug administration in mice suffering from movement disorders caused by conditions such as epilepsy.

“This is called scoring, because the AI measures a score. Raising the arm to a certain extent is one point, and raising it higher is two points. The AI determines the score based on various criteria.”

In the past, researchers recorded changes in mice behavior by watching videos they had taken frame by frame, but this was time-consuming and subjective.
The bio company developed an AI animal behavior analysis program, which it presented at an international conference on Artificial Intelligence.
The program received an Innovation Award last year at the International Consumer Electronics Show, one of the world’s largest IT and home appliance exhibitions.

The company said it trained the AI with about 100-thousand frames of images for each behavioral criterion, such as tail paralysis, which had been previously measured by humans.

The company said it could also measure very small skeletal changes through AI analysis of behavioral change speed extracted from the skeletal data.

“Since we measure and quantify the positional coordinates of each skeleton, we can identify how the details of behavioral disorders have changed and improved.”

The company previously applied the AI program to animal testing for multiple sclerosis and epilepsy treatments being developed by South Korean pharmaceutical and bio companies, and is further preparing to enter overseas markets.

Researchers hope that deriving objective and accurate data with AI programs will increase the success rate of new drug development.
