Hey there, Dylan Curious from the Curious Future channel here, and in this video, we’re diving deep into the world’s top AI powerhouse – Google’s DeepMind Technologies. Initially a standalone entity, DeepMind is now a British subsidiary of Google Alphabet, with a founding mission back in 2010 to “solve intelligence” and then use that intelligence to solve everything else.
We start our journey by getting to know the mind behind DeepMind – Demis Hassabis, a man with an illustrious history as a researcher, neuroscientist, video game designer, entrepreneur, and a five-time world champion of a strategy game named Pentamind. From his humble beginnings as a chess prodigy and video game designer to co-founding the game design company, Elixir Studios, Hassabis’s journey ultimately led him to the world of artificial intelligence with DeepMind.
Founded in 2010, DeepMind has always been a center for top-tier talent and investment, focused on the integration of deep learning and reinforcement learning. In 2014, Google acquired DeepMind for a reported $650 million, one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the UK.
DeepMind’s contributions to AI are substantial, with groundbreaking achievements like AlphaGo, Alpha Fold, and Alpha Zero. In particular, AlphaGo’s victory in 2016, where it defeated the world’s best Go player, marked a pivotal moment in AI history, showcasing the power of deep learning and reinforcement learning techniques.
DeepMind then ventured into healthcare, with the launch of a division applying AI techniques to healthcare. However, DeepMind’s work with the UK National Health Services raised controversy regarding patient data protection.
Undeterred, DeepMind hit another milestone with Alpha Fold, an AI system that can predict the 3D structure of an amino acid. This system can have profound impacts on the future of disease and health treatments.
Recently, DeepMind’s parent company, Google Alphabet, was taken by surprise with the release of OpenAI’s GPT-4, prompting Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, to instigate Project Gemini. A collaboration between Google Brain and DeepMind, Project Gemini promises to be a game-changer in the field of large language models.
