Tecplot Data File Types (DAT, PLT, SZPLT)

This video explains the uses and differences between Tecplot’s three native data file types. Learn more at http://www.tecplot.com/learning/szl/

ASCII DAT data format (*.dat) is a simple human-readable format and is perfect for smaller data sets when working between multiple applications.

Binary PLT format (*.plt) is Tecplot’s traditional format and significantly more efficient than the plain text ASCII format.

Binary SZL format (*.szplt) subdivides and catalogs volume zones so that only data from needed areas is loaded. The SZL loading techniques make this format the most efficient and significantly faster than the traditional PLT format.

SZL format has smaller files sizes, faster load and image rendering times, and uses less memory than either PLT or DAT file formats.
